Welcome to the Torrance High Track & Field Home page! The Tartars have been running their track program for over 70 years, starting with the era of Louis Zamperini. Now, the team is roughly 125 people strong, with several skilled and wonderful coaches, including head coach Kyle Irvine who has been coaching for 14 years. He is very proud of his athletes, and  their accomplishments over the last nine years. Varsity Boys have been Ocean League Champs and Pioneer League Champs 3 times, and THS has sent numerous athletes to the CIF levels of competition, including Doug Westphal, who was an 800 meter State Qualifier in 2001, and Kevin Finney, who finished second in the long jump at State, 2002, and Kent Morikawa who went to the state qualifier in the 3200 M, in 2007.

Torrance High Track and Field provides the following benefits:

• Physical fitness
• Strength and endurance
• Healthy competition
• Improved confidence and self esteem
• Social interaction
• Working independently and as a team

History of Track and Field: The ancient Olympic Games began in the year 776 BC, when Koroibos, a cook from the nearby city of Elis, won the stadium race, a foot race 600 feet long. According to some literary traditions, this was the only athletic event of the games for the first 13 Olympic festivals.

Track and field athletics in the United States dates from the 1860s. The Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America, the nation's first national athletic group, held the first collegiate races in 1873, and in 1888 the Amateur Athletic Union (which governed the sport for nearly a century) held its first championships.
